Next Generation Of Firefighters Train To Take On Growing Threat Of Wildfires | NBC Nightly News

In a year fraught with some of the worst wildfires in history the race is on to train the next generation of firefighters this is Drummond Creek burn unit it’s a hundred and ten acres meet the Clemson University fire Tigers they’re students in a unique program that’s teaching them wild fire prevention in and out of the classroom for junior caroline sharp these lessons are personal she’s never ventured far from South Carolina but beneath her hometown Southern drawl this fiercely determined 20 year old knows she wants to battle wildfires my dad’s a structural firefighter back home and I’m a third generation the Tigers graduate as certified wildland firefighters training alongside veterans like Helen Moore who started the program two years ago there is a greater need for wildland firefighters we need young people to understand how fire works and how to use that fire to manage our land so that we in the future have less catastrophic fire they learn to fight fire with fire a method called prescribed burning these burns reduce hazardous fuels which protect for more extreme fires promote growth and minimize the threat of insects and disease we like to put fire on the ground under our conditions under our terms they are also learning to use the same innovative technology that firefighters out west are using there’s a lot of new map applications apps out there for the iPads two phones once they complete the program they’re certified to fight fires anywhere in the country you come out of college you’re literally ready to hop on a fire right there a future firefighter with dreams of working the frontlines Tammy Lightner NBC News Sumter National Forest South Carolina hey NBC News fans thanks for checking out our youtube channel subscribe by clicking on that button down here and click on any of the videos over here to watch the latest interviews show highlights and digital exclusives thanks for watching
