The outcome of the Senate Judiciary Committee vote was 11-8 on Thursday to take on Judge Amul Thapar as a member of the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley complimented Thapar on Thursday saying he is an “independent” and “fair-minded” judge who will do wonders equally for the “rich and poor.”
“He’ll make a fine 6th Circuit judge and I’m pleased to support him,” Grassley stated. “He’s demonstrated great qualifications and capability when he testified before us.”
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Judiciary Committee’s ranking Democrat, voted in opposition to Thapar. She disclosed her opposition by saying that one of Thapar’s ideas cited the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling that eliminated limitations to political spending.
Thapar, who President Trump incorporated in his Supreme Court shortlists, faced severe opposition from progressives seeking to thwart his candidacy. Throughout Judiciary Committee hearings concerning his nomination, Senate Democrats pressed Thapar on his connections to the Federalist Society, a right-oriented legal organization that assisted with writing Trump’s Supreme Court shortlists.
Thapar is the child of Indian-American immigrants born in Kentucky. If one more Supreme Court opening materializes sometime soon, Thapar could be a major contender yet again.
