President-Elect Trump said that German Chancellor Merkel was clearly Europe’s most important leader and that the EU had become a vehicle for Germany. The President-Elect then also gave details of his foreign policy goals and strategies in interviews with German and British press.
He said that Mrs. Merkel made one “very catastrophic mistake” by admitting more than million migrants, says BBC. President-Elect Trump said the US had to address its trade deficit with the rest of the world, particularly with China. The main thing to focus on in the coming years for his administration should be smart trade. Not free trade.
When Trump was asked about a possible deal with Russia, the President-Elect then said that nuclear weapons should be part of it. Trump also said they should be “reduced very substantially”. This would be in return for lifting the US sanctions.
Turning to the Middle East, Trump condemned the 2003 invasion of Iraq as possibly the worst decision ever made in the history of the country, and said safe zones should have been created within Syria and paid for by the United States’ Gulf allies.
